Artwork competition ‘INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE’

1st PRIZE in the “Visual Artwork Contest”

“Don’t shut me out”

This was the motto of the Greek Organization against Drugs & N.T.U.A.prizewinning poster for the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The Organization against Drugs chose an original and at the same time simple message for the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (26th of June): “Don’t shut me out”. Apart from the motto the other main element of the poster which was to be used for the activities which were to be organized in various cities of Greece would be the archetypal symbol of dance.

The symbol on the poster draws its inspiration from a clay composite figurine dating to the Archaic Period (6th century B.C.) exhibited in the National Arcaeological Museum of Athens. It is a rich in symbolism group of human figures arranged in a circle, nicknamed “Circular Dance”.

According to the poster’s creator Giannis Giannoutsos, Architectural Engineer and Visual Artist, “The creation of the poster was occasioned by the notion of Dance, which is an important part of the individual’s rehabilitation”. The figures are clasping hands in a symbolic and archetypal gesture. The circle symbolizes unity, solidarity and equality. The dance’s circular arrangement alludes to the Archaic ‘Circular Dance’.The choice to use the message ‘Don’t shut me out’ points out that in this effort we all become ‘one body’”.
