THE AΙGINA “GROUP” . KAPRALOS, MORALIS, NIKOLAOU"

The study explores the life and work of three of the most celebrated representatives of Modern Greek Art, members of the so-called “1930’s generation”—an artistic and literary movement which sought to re-imagine the meaning of “Greekness” in the era of Modernity: Christos Kapralos, Ioannis Moralis, and Nikos Nikolaou.

In the course of our research we often refer to the life and work of these artists on the island of Aegina. At first we consider the historical background against which the “group” was formed and then examine when and under what circumstances this happened. Next we delve into the reasons that made them choose Aigina as a place to reside and create and we proceed to analyze some of their most important works produced during their stay on the island.

The title “the Aigina Group” does not refer solely to their living in such proximity to each other but rather to their intellectual affinity. The artists drew energy by forming the group sharing a common passion and a common purpose: how to approach their own “truth” through Art.
