'MUSEUM OF THE 2Oth CENTURY'

BERLIN, GERMANY

Neue Nationalgalerie – Museum des 20. Jahrhundert, Berlin

The Museum of Twentieth-Century Art in Berlin acts as a binding link destined to spatially unify a wider public space. The new museum is constructed introspectively bordering the public street. An extended introverted, free, square-like space is thus formed among the central buildings of the Kulturforum. The visual and functional integration of the Hans-Scharoun-Platz, the Matthäikirchplatz and La Piazzetta is thus achieved.

The new museum is situated in a zone defined by the Potsdamer Straße and the boundary of the Neue Galerie. The site is selected in an attempt to preserve the unhindered visual communication between the Neue Galerie and the proposed structure: it will accordingly enable the “conversation” between the old and the new museum. In order to emphasize the intention to unify public space, this new composition unfolds below level ground. The choice is determined by the decision to appropriately connect—spatially and functionally—the Neue Galerie both on the ground and the underground level.

The new museum is distinguished by its volume and mass, which lend the character of a landmark to the building, and the open-air area which semantically charts its individual functions. The foyer is outlined by low walls and a perforated shell. The latter filters light as it enters the spaces spreading beneath the ground.
